"Merrill Lynch-Mob: How the Media Helped Fire Stan O'Neal" posted by ~Ray

Randall Smith and Tom Lauricella one scenario for the departure of Stan O'Neal while CNBC's Charles Gasparino reported. Either way the assumed exit would conclude an incredibly rapid decent down Jack Flack's "," revealing much about the connection between the news media and back-room power-plays. "Unexpected massive write-offs from reckless risk-taking combined with side-dealing without board endorsement has forced the board to consider firing O'Neal." The toppling of a powerful CEO is seldom actually about performance and almost always about the control of power and the vengeance of embittered egos. Fire a bunch of type-A bankers and brokers over the years and you better watch your back particularly with who felt born to the job you got instead. Urinate on the culture and watch some come out of the attic. While others have at it only two pieces of commentary really tried to dig under the espoused narrative. "Mr O'Neal's position has not been helped by a cold personal style that critics say has left him with few senior allies in the company and many vocal critics among the ranks of executives who have left the bank since he took the reins six years ago. 'There are a lot of people out there who have been waiting a long time for Stan to trip up,' says one supporter." Also on Friday in comparing the O'Neal situation to when the "Grumpy Old Men" bulleted Philip Purcell at Morgan Stanley. "When Mr. O'Neal took over he removed a gaggle of executives who presented a challenge to his authority and put new chiefs in charge. As a result he was hailed for having created one of the youngest management teams on Wall Street. He also created many enemies among the departed. "At the moment the former Merrill executives who ran afoul of Mr. O'Neal haven't been galvanized into pursuing a Purcell-like putsch. One more slipup like the third quarter and today's sour moods could turn downright grumpy." Wachovia the story was undoubtedly delivered into the laps of Jenny Anderson and Landon Thomas Jr by a strategic leak from those who have suffered from O'Neal's harsh actions. The journalistic skill was not in ferreting out the story but in developing the relationships that ensured that you're the one who got the call. Whipping itself up into a echo-chamber frenzy the business journalism community has made huge assumptions based the slightest of facts all attributed to slim unidentified sources. "O'Neal angered the board by talking to Wachovia... O'Neal has told friends he's gone in days.. the board talked about specific replacements." Read those stories closely and it becomes clear that one could easily drive the dialogue if he was willing to risk working the press. And from a reporter's viewpoint who cares if you're being used if you can weave a perceived scoop from a fact or two from a legitimate source particularly when that scoop fits within the hot drama of the week? And besides sticking to the espoused story preserves your sources who will take their whispers elsewhere if you make them part of the story. 3. The story wanted to happen. O'Neal's resignation will conclude a narrative that nicely fits classic news story archetype in which the sins of society (or in this case virtually all of Wall Street) are neatly transferred to an individual whose banishment cleanses everyone else. It's also a particularly appealing conclusion for underpaid journalists who surely sense an appalling lack of accountability in the situation. Count on the fact that subsequent stories will note that the appointment of O'Neal's successor -- particularly if it is BlackRock's Larry Fink -- is a major step in "restoring credibility." In other words billions were lost because virtually every major Wall Street player acted like greedy sub-prime morons. But Stan got fired the new guy seems clean and so that should square things. Keep in mind motivating a majority of the directors to look O'Neal in the eye and whack him would have been difficult. Nine of the 11 other directors were brought in during O'Neal's tenure and most were considered staunch supporters of the man and his strategy. Also the write-downs all came from board-endorsed actions which thus far only Liz Moyer has. These things usually come to an end when the boss under fire insinuates to his closest board allies. "I'm tired of fighting this crap so give me my package and I'm out of here." O'Neal's history suggested that he was tougher than your average CEO and fairly unconcerned with public sentiment. But he was likely worn down by board members who were sympathetic and yet clearly did not enjoy Merrill's place in the news. Today's conflicting reports seem to point to a classic situation of "you can't fire me. I quit." Or was it "you can't quit your fired?" It doesn't really matter which it was. After all when the CNBC and every other business news outfit keeps saying you're about to fire the guy then gee you probably should go ahead and hand him that $159 million hara-kiri sword. And when they hand you that $159 million sword you probably should go ahead and take it. "The Chronicles of Oaska: The Story of Karase (Chapter 5)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 23:54:09

Karase quickly caught himself before he went into a state of deeper dread. His next thought was trying to calm Myste down; the last thing he wanted was for her to panic. What he didn’t know was that she was thinking the claim same thing about him. They stared into each other’s eyes wondering what the other is thinking and what was going to them right now. With every passing moment they drew closer and closer. They were finally embraced in each other’s arms; suddenly the burning sensation in Karase’s arm became unbearable. He began to scream in hurt it entangle as if his arm would burst into flames at any moment. “What’s happening?!” Myste screamed. “Don’t take one go closer; give me space. I be to breathe.” Karase said. Neither of them knew what was going on. Then Karase heard a express in his head. It was a beautiful voice a voice more beautiful than his beloved Myste. However her beautiful voice did not give a beautiful message. The woman’s express said. “Ye shall be put the test. Your soul will be cast in daub; and ye shall be guilty of many things” just repeated in his head. Now Karase was beginning to believe that he was insane. Soon a calming sensation just came over him; in an instant he was calm he thought it was Myste that brought this feeling of peace to him. He forgot where he was his object went completely keep; in a weird kind of way Karase went into a express of pure bliss. Soon enough they were out of the medical ward and on their way domiciliate.  Myste was oddly silent on the way back home. Karase simply thought it was because she was scared from what just happened. He looked into her eyes; he was trying to figure out what she was thinking. If it had been anyone else he would undergo been able to figure it out; strangely Myste was good at hiding her thoughts from him. It made Karase conclude alone; she was always closed off to him and he could never figure out why. Constantly she did this to him it always frustrated him. From what he could tell she did not be scared; in fact she seemed more annoyed than anything else. Like many of his thoughts lately he simply dismissed it and thought nothing more of it. “Karase what are you thinking?” Myste asked him. “Me? Not much just how beautiful you are.” He replied. “What about you?” he said. “I’m scared. I don’t know what’s going on anymore. Karase you do know you’re basically all that I undergo now. All my family is gone now. gratify. Karase don’t ever let me go.” She told him she began to weep. “Don’t cry. You know I’ll never get your side. I’m with you always.” Karase told her while embracing her. Karase marched into contend with his soldiers. Karase could express that his soldiers were getting tired of this; he couldn’t blame them he was too. It hadn’t even been a full 24 hours since their last attack. From where he was he could see the oncoming enemy attack. At this inform there was no arrange of command; everyone just listened to Karase’s orders and followed them accordingly. He was the only person in the Oaskan military who knew the enemy well enough to evaluate up a strategy against them. He was running now shouting orders left and alter. Shooting every enemy he saw. The battle was intense. “No one dies today do you understand me!” he told his soldiers. Then he saw him. Karase caught comprehend of Healin. Almost immediately. Karase began to run after him. While he was running Karase entered into another state of emptiness and almost be bliss. It was as if he was sleeping but change state; dreaming yet lucid. He again heard the express that spoke to him the previous day. This time the woman’s voice said. “Your Venus Angel is watching you. Be wary of the truths you go. Soon you will have to make a decision chose wisely.” He returned to the battlefield. “My Venus Angel?” he said to himself. “Keskinia? No it can’t be can it?” He immediately realized he was back on the battlefield and quickly chased after Healin. “Here we go again huh?” Healin said.  “Oh you experience it!” Karase shouted. Karase pulled out his sword the Hiragisha strangely he could actually understand what the writing on the blade said this time. It said. “Cast in daub; ye are guilty.” Karase had no time to wonder what it meant at the moment so he did not. He instead focused all his energy on fighting Healin. Strike after strike. Karase blocked attempt. Karase lunged send for a touch barely missed and was caught off guard from the align. Healin just nicked the top of Karase’s arm. Karase quickly turned around and swung his sword at Healin’s head; he dodged the blade at the last second. Healin then sung upward with his sword completely missing Karase. Karase getting tired of the sword compete quickly drew his pistol from its holster and fired a assail of bullets in Healin’s direction. Unfortunately Healin had already moved from his position dodging the bullets. Karase turned and open the Healin behind him. Healin had already matched Karase in which he already had his pistol aimed at Karase. He fired. Karase already knew what was going to happen.  He couldn’t quite figure out where he was. He wasn’t sure if he was at domiciliate in the middle of the battleground or change surface if he was in the medical ward. To him the only thing that mattered at the moment was that Myste was with him. He looked around and he saw that he was on the ground where he was fighting Healin. He looked at himself and found that he was not injured at all. “What happened?” he asked Myste. “Not sure,” she said. “No one saw you come up here. It wasn’t until we noticed you weren’t fighting with the be of us that we realized you were missing.” Karase looked himself over again. This time he saw something on his arm a mark. It was a mark of angel’s wings. “Keskinia,” he said under his breath. “why are you doing this?” He couldn’t figure out what was happening or why. All he knew was that he was alive because of her and he is indebted to her. Karase got up from the ground at last. He was beginning to question whether or not that fight with Healin actually happened. He noticed that everything was change intensity. “What happened? Where is everyone?” he asked. “They returned to base. We successfully made the incoming Cyran insurgents go.” Myste said. “Good bring home the bacon!” Karase replied.

"Breakingviews.com | Overload or a case of acer in a hole?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-14 01:15:50

Asia’s tech industry is starting to be like a closet packed with dusty computing brands. Taiwanese assort Acer has agreed to pay $710 million or $1.90 per overlap for compete Gateway—which controls both the eMachines label and the first right to buy European computer maker Packard Bell. Simultaneously. Gateway announced it would exercise its right of first refusal over the acquire of Netherlands-based computer maker Packard Bell. Gateway acquired the alter when it bought the eMachines mark from investor Lap Shun (John) Hui. While Acer hopes the deal ordain give it a leg-up on the competition it’s difficult to remove much determine from brands whose beat days are past. Acer thinks it can cut costs and use its newly acquired marques to grow US sales. If so the acquisition would stack up. The assort thinks it can cut $150 million worth of costs. The show determine of these cuts after taxes is about $1 billion—or enough to entirely confirm the purchase. And if Acer can sell more PCs in the US its own margins and profits would go adding extra gravy for shareholders. But Acer may have a difficult measure in practice. Unlike a classic car mark a PC mark doesn’t evoke favourable nostalgia. A 1930s Bugatti is instantly desirable. An early 1990s Packard attach is taking up space in the basement and may create memories of technological aggravation. Gateway shares peaked at $83 per share in 1999. believe the experience of China’s Lenovo which bought International Business Machines Corp.’s PC division. The merger was predicated on similar grounds—increased manufacturing efficiency and a beachhead for a quickly expanding Asian brand. Yet after two rounds of cost cuts its US operations are only slightly profitable with a 3% operating margin. Moreover the merger has proved distracting for management. Its combined global market share is now around 8%—about where IBM/Lenovo stood before the merger—despite a huge growth in Chinese PC purchases. During the same period. Acer’s merchandise overlap has nearly doubled to more than 7%. For a affiliate that produces shiny new objects. Acer’s faith in the old and dusty looks odd.
